Cervical cancer poses a significant health challenge in India, ranking as the second most prevalent cancer and a leading cause of death among women. Despite its preventability, the lack of effective early detection remains a major issue, particularly in resource-limited settings where screening infrastructure is often inadequate.
In response to this pressing need, a team of visionary scientists from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bengaluru founded bioLOCKEY Healthworks. This multidisciplinary startup is focused on pioneering the next generation of point-of-care diagnostics. Utilizing their proprietary Nanobody discovery platform, NANOdx™, bioLOCKEY Healthworks is developing smart, affordable, and pervasive diagnostic tools to address critical women’s and maternal healthcare needs.
At the heart of their mission is the selfCERVIX kit, a groundbreaking self-testing diagnostic tool aimed at providing accessible, point-of-care screening for cervical cancer. They joined GDC’s I-NCUBATE program to gain critical market insights and enhance their approach for scaling their innovative selfCERVIX kit effectively.
When bioLOCKEY Healthworks joined the GDC I-NCUBATE Program, they envisioned a straightforward path: develop a product and market it directly to women in need. However, the program’s comprehensive customer discovery phase unveiled a deeper and more complex landscape. Initial assumptions were quickly challenged as they engaged with various stakeholders, revealing that women alone were not the primary decision-makers.
The GDC program helped bioLOCKEY Healthworks understand that while women are the ultimate beneficiaries of cervical cancer screening, the decision to adopt new diagnostic tools is influenced by healthcare providers and public health entities. This realization prompted a strategic pivot from a direct-to-consumer approach to a business-to-business model. By focusing on collaborations with hospitals, clinics, and public health agencies, bioLOCKEY Healthworks aims to leverage existing infrastructure and reach a broader audience.
This shift in focus has not only refined their market approach but also strengthened their value proposition. The bioLOCKEY team has been able to build meaningful partnerships and gather valuable feedback, which is instrumental in advancing their product development and market entry strategies.
As bioLOCKEY Healthworks continues to evolve, their journey through the GDC I-NCUBATE Program stands as a testament to the power of mentorship and strategic guidance.
