Dr. Gururaj ‘Desh’ Deshpande

Co-founder and Chairman – Deshpande Foundation, President and Chairman – Sparta Group LLC

Dr. Gururaj ‘Desh’ Deshpande is a Trustee of the Deshpande Foundation, President and Chairman of Sparta Group LLC, a family investment office and Chairman of Tejas Networks.

Dr. Deshpande has pursued an entrepreneurial career for three decades, being involved as founder, founding investor or chairman of several companies including Cascade Communications, Sycamore Networks, Coral Networks, Tejas Networks, Cimaron, Webdialogs, Airvana, Sandstone Capital, A123 Systems and Curata. He co-chaired the National Council to support President Obama’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship strategy from 2010 to 2015.

Serving as a life-member of the MIT Corporation, he has fructified MIT’s Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. The Deshpande Foundation strengthens ecosystems that create significant social and economic impact through entrepreneurship and innovation. Leveraging the experience gained at the MIT Center, the Deshpande Foundation has facilitated the setup of five other centres; Deshpande Center for Social Entrepreneurship in India, EforAll (formerly known as the Merrimack Valley Sandbox) in Lowell/Lawrence Massachusetts, the Pond-Deshpande Center at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, the Dunin Deshpande Queens Innovation Center at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario and the Gopalakrishnan Deshpande Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. Deshpande Foundation also provided the founding grant for MassChallenge in Boston, National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps™), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the UPOP program at MIT.

He lives in Boston and holds a B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras, an M.E. from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and Ph.D. from Queens University in Canada.

Mr. Kris Gopalalakrishnan

Chairman – Axilor Ventures, Co-founder and former CEO – Infosys

Mr. ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan served as the Vice Chairman of Infosys from 2011 to 2014, and as its CEO & MD from 2007 to 2011, and is one of the co-founders of Infosys.

Recognised as a global business and technology thought leader, he was voted the top CEO (IT services category) in Institutional Investor’s inaugural ranking of Asia’s Top Executives. He was selected as one of the winners of the 2nd Asian Corporate Director Recognition Awards by Corporate Governance Asia in 2011. In 2009, Kris was also selected to Thinkers 50, an elite list of global business thinkers. He was elected President of CII, India’s apex industry chamber during 2013 – 14, and served as one of the co-chairs of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, 2014. In January 2011, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honour.

He serves on the Board of Governors of IIT Madras, and IIM Bangalore. He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT Bangalore, and is also on the Board of Trustees of the Chennai Mathematical Institute. Kris holds a master’s degrees in physics and computer science from IIT Madras.

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi

Ex – Director – IIT Madras

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi joined the faculty of IIT Madras, his alma mater in 1986. He took over as Director, IIT Madras in September 2011.

Prof. Ramamurthi’s areas of specialisation are communications and signal processing. His research work is in wireless networks, modulation, wireless data, and audio and video compression. He was awarded the University of California Regents Fellowship during his doctoral studies. He is a founding member of the TeNeT group of IIT Madras, active in developing telecom and networking technologies, and incubating companies to develop and market products based on these.

He is currently also honorary Director of the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, a public-private initiative at the IIT-M Research Park to make India a wireless technology leader.

Prof. Ramamurthi is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is also an Honorary Fellow of the International Medical Sciences Academy. He was awarded the Vasvik Award for Electronic Sciences and Technology for the year 2000, the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award for Engineering and Technology for the year 2003 and the India Semiconductor Association TechnoVisionary Award for the year 2011 and the Doyens of Madras Award for the year 2014.

He has a B. Tech degree in Electronics from IIT Madras in 1980 and has done his M.S. and Ph. D in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara, in 1982 and 1985 respectively.

PROF. V. KAMAKOTI VEEZHINATHAN
Director – IIT Madras

Prof. V. Kamakoti Veezhinathan received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras. He joined the faculty of IIT Madras in 2001 and took over as its Director in January 2022.
He specializes in the area of Computer Architecture, Information Security and VLSI Design. He heads the Microprocessor Development Program and the Information Security Education and Awareness Program at IIT Madras funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. He is member of the National Security Advisory Board. He was also the Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force constituted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. At IIT Madras he has served as the Chairman, JEE and as Associate Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research.
He has over 150 publications in International Journals and Conferences, guided many research scholars for their PhD and Master of Science (By research) program. He has coordinated and successfully delivered close to 50 projects from Industry and Government R&D establishments. He serves in the Technology committees of the National Stock Exchange and Reserve Bank of India.
Dr. Kamakoti is the recipient of DRDO Academic Excellence Award, Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association Techno Visionary Award, ‘Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship’, ACCS Life-time Achievement Award, IBM Faculty Award and VASVIK Industrial Research award.

Prof. Krishnan Balasubramaniam has been involved in the field of non-destructive evaluation for more than 25 years with applications and specialisations in the areas of maintenance, quality assurance, manufacturing and design. His areas of interests include intelligent manufacturing and in-process monitoring, structural health monitoring, and applied data analysis. He has over 250 technical publications (including 102 refereed journal papers) and has directed 12 PHD student dissertations and 35 MS student theses.

He has also served as a consultant to many multi-national companies including GE, Corning Inc., BF Goodrich, Gillette, Caterpillar, Lockheed-Martin, Nippon TV, Karta Technologies, Seiger Spintech, etc. He is currently a consultant to US Air Force, Timken, Boeing, Astrium, Corning, HAL, Indian Navy, ARDE, GE, BHEL, etc. He is also the Principal Investigator in several sponsored research projects funded by DST, DAE, ADA, ISRO and DRDO organizations.

Prof. Balasubramaniam is an active member of ISNT, ASNT, SAMPE, ASME, UIA and ASA and has organized several international symposiums and workshops. At present he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Non-destructive Evaluation, and as the South-East Asia Editor for the Journal of Non-destructive Testing and Evaluation (Taylor and Francis). He is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Structural Longevity.

He holds an undergraduate degree in M.E from the University of Madras, and a M.S degree from Drexel University, Philadelphia. He completed his Ph.D. from Drexel University, Philadelphia in 1989 and was employed as an Associate Professor with the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at Mississippi State University briefly before he started his career in IIT in 2000.

R. Raghuttama Rao, fondly called Raghu, is the Chief Executive Officer of GDC. Former Chief Mentor of ICRA, a credit rating and analytical firm in South Asia and a subsidiary of Moody’s, his last executive role was as MD & CEO of IMaCS. IMaCS is a management consulting business founded by him as a subsidiary of ICRA, which has an operating footprint in over 20 countries.

He was a member of ICRA’s start-up team in 1991 and has helped developed many areas of ICRA, including credit rating, management consulting, analytics, IT and research. Raghu has wide consulting experience in areas of public policy, risk, strategy and capacity building. Prior to ICRA, Raghu has also worked with Larsen & Toubro Limited and Maruti Suzuki Limited.

Raghu has a post graduate diploma in management from IIM Ahmedabad and is a Bachelor of Technology in M.E from IIT Madras. He is a qualified management accountant and was a Fulbright scholar at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA.

Chief Marketing Officer

He is a graduate of IIT Madras with an MBA and work experience in industry and academic institutions of over 35 years. He has held prominent roles with the Murugappa Group of Steel and Insurance companies and has a wealth of professional experience in the car, steel, and non-life insurance industries.

His expertise covers product marketing, service marketing and nonprofit markets. He built his functional competencies in the early stages of his career in Business Strategy, Human Resources, Business Development, Marketing, Project Management, Setting up New Businesses, Cross-border Partnerships and Technology Transfers.

Following his corporate career, he served as the first CEO of IIT Madras’ Office of Institutional Advancement. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the institution’s growth and made significant contributions, including helping raise funds from corporate and alumni sources.

He has worked closely with Indian corporations, trusts, foundations, and IIT Madras alumni worldwide to generate financial support. With deep experience in developing institutional processes for alumni relations, he has contributed to IIT Madras, PAN IIT, and several other academic institutions.

ANAND KV

Chief Innovation Officer

KV has a deep understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship, the start-up ecosystem in India, and training and coaching methods. In his earlier avatar, he was a Senior Business Leader in pay television, cable, broadband and e-commerce industries. He was a member of the founding team and has served as the Chief Service Officer of Tata Sky Ltd. He played a pivotal role in implementing revenue management and customer experience strategies, systems, policies and processes at Hathway Cable & Datacomm Ltd. during its digitalization as the President of Digital Platforms. KV designed and created the Customer Experience Blueprint at Flipkart as its Senior Vice President. Prior to these assignments in India, he spent several years in the Middle East and Hong Kong with STAR TV in numerous leadership roles and a short stint at BSkyB in the United Kingdom.

Post his corporate career, he has been working with the Deshpande Foundation (Hubli), and several other accelerators in India in designing and delivering programs for start-ups. He was appointed as a Consultant and Chief Mentor for Youth Co:Lab India in 2020, an initiative by UNDP and Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), India. KV also coaches and mentors Change Makers, Social Entrepreneurs and Fellows of a leadership programme for aspiring young Women Leaders.

KV is a Cost and Management Accountant by education (CMA), a Professional Certified Coach (ICF), certified MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory professional and an NLP practitioner.
